WASRG is pleased to present a Fall legislator luncheon series. We will have the opportunity to hear legislators from around the country address the top issues states are facing and how they might impact business as usual!

Minnesota Senate President Sandy Pappas

Senator Pappas was first elected to the Minnesota House of Representatives in 1984, where she served three terms before being elected to the Senate in 1990.

Senator Pappas is the current President of the Minnesota Senate. She is the chair of the State and Local Government Committee and is a member of the Capital Investment, Commerce, Finance and Rules and Administration Committees. She is the former chair of the Senate Higher Education Budget and Policy Committee.  Senator Pappas is also the Chair of the Legislative Commission on Pensions and Retirement and Vice Chair of the Legislative Coordinating Commission.

This session, Pappas authored and passed the Prosperity (Dream) Act legislation to allow undocumented students, that have attended a Minnesota high school for at least three years, the ability to qualify for in state college tuition and be eligible to apply for aid from the state grant. She also secured funding for the Safe Harbor Law to create a safety net of housing and support services for sex trafficking victims.

In past sessions, Pappas authored legislation to enhance penalties for blocking access to health facilities, to enact tougher crack house eviction laws, and to fund recruitment and support programs for minority students who want to be teachers. Pappas also championed legislation that provided state funding for all-day kindergarten and school readiness; the Minnesota Children's Museum; the Wabasha Bridge; and the new Harriet Island Regional Park. Additionally, Sen. Pappas is the author of the STAR Program, a half-cent municipal sales tax dedicated to housing and economic development in St. Paul neighborhoods.

Don't miss this opportunity to hear Senator Pappas' unique insights on the issues facing state governments today.
